Course Descriptions
Our art courses teach
students the fundamentals of how to draw. Students are then exposed to
various mediums: pencil, colour pencil, and water colour. We offer four
levels: Art 1, Art 2, Art 3, and Art 4.

Chinese Language (Cantonese and Putonghua)
Our Chinese courses are
intensive and cover a wide variety of aspects of Putonghua or Cantonese.
For these Chinese language courses, a wide range of reading, writing, speaking,
and listening skills are covered. Relevant Chinese history and culture is
also incorporated. Textbooks and workbooks are used throughout the courses.
One intention of these programs is to prepare students to take the Grades 9
course in Putonghua or Cantonese in high school. Classes are two hours
each and are offered at the following levels: pre-school (for students who are
three years old), preparation 1 and 2 (JK and SK), and levels 1 to 8 (Grades 1
to 8).

For the Putonghua
conversation courses, various in-class exercises and homework assignments are
used to help students develop strong speaking and listening skills.
Classes are one hour each and are offered at the following levels: junior,
intermediate, and senior.
English JK to English 8
Our regular English program
starts from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. The courses are designed to
complement the Ontario English curriculum. However, more emphasis is
placed on grammar and writing techniques. Aspects of reading, writing,
speaking, and listening are covered. Students currently taking English as
a Second Language (ESL) courses should consult with Marilake administrative
staff to select an appropriate course level.
English 9 - Creative
Writing Level 1
This course introduces
students to various aspects of creative writing. Many writing assignments
and projects will be assigned throughout the course to develop students' skills
and techniques of creative writing. This course is particularly suitable
for students who have completed English 8 or Creative Writing Junior.
English 10 - Creative
Writing Level 2
Continuing the creative
writing skills developed in Creative Writing Level 1, this course focuses on
various aspects of literature. There will also be an emphasis on
understanding various types of English literature from many countries around
the world. Students will be expected to write literature review,
literature analysis, and be assigned larger writing assignments and
projects. By the end of this course, students will become more competent
writers, and will be ready for the challenges of senior level high school
English.
French Beginner 1, 2,
and 3
French Beginner 1 assumes
students have had no prior knowledge of the French language. Various
aspects of reading, writing, speaking, and listening are covered. These
three courses together ensure students develop a strong foundation in French.
French Levels 1 to 6
These courses follow the
French immersion curriculum approach. The courses are also designed to
benefit students in French School, extended French, and core French.
Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are covered. Newly registered
students are advised to take an assessment test to ensure they are placed in
the appropriate classes.

Mathematics JK to
Mathematics 8
These advanced courses
designed to exceed Ontario's curriculum expectations by one year. For
example, the Mathematics 6 course covers material from the Ontario mathematics
curriculum for Grade 7. Challenging problems are used throughout these
courses to enhance students' problem solving skills. A goal of these
courses is to encourage students to develop stronger analytical thinking
skills.
Mathematics 9
This course covers all
aspects of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 9 Academic, Principles of
Mathematics. Challenging problems are used throughout the course to
enhance students' problem solving skills.
Mathematics 10
This course enables
students to broaden their understanding of the three key topics in the Grade 10
Academic, Principles of Mathematics course. They are: Quadratic Relations,
Analytic Geometry, and Trigonometry. This course also provides a review of
polynomials. Enrichment topics in systems of linear equations and linear
programming are also introduced. Challenging problems are used throughout the
course to enhance students' problem solving skills. Classes are 90 minutes each
and run for one semester only.
Mathematics 11
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 11 University
Preparation course in mathematics. Challenging problems are used
throughout the course to enhance students' problem solving skills.
Classes are 90 minutes each and run for one semester only.
Mathematics 12 --
Advanced Functions
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 12 University
Preparation course.. Challenging problems are used throughout the course
to enhance students' problem solving skills. Classes are 90 minutes each
and run for one semester only.
Mathematics 12 -- Calculus
& Vectors
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 12 University
Preparation course, the calculus & vectors portion of the Grade 12
University Preparation course. Challenging problems are used throughout
the course to enhance students' problem solving skills. Classes are 90
minutes each and run for one semester only.
Mathematics 12 -- Data
Management
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 12 University
Preparation course, Mathematics for Data Management. Challenging problems
are used throughout the course to enhance students' problem solving
skills. Classes are 90 minutes each and run for one semester only.
Mathematics 12 --
Advanced Calculus
Prerequisite: Completion of Marilake's Advanced Functions and
Calculus course, or clearance from Marilake School Administration
This course is designed for
students who plan to take the AP (Advanced Placement) exam or who want to learn
more to prepare for university. Challenging problems are used throughout
the course to enhance students' problem solving skills. Classes are 90
minutes each and run for one semester only.
Elementary Science
This course introduces
elementary school students (grades 6, and 7) to science. Various aspects
of basic biology, chemistry, and physics are covered.
Pre-High School Science
This course introduces
grades 8, and 9 students to science. Various aspects of basic biology,
chemistry, and physics are covered.
Science 10
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 10 Academic Science
course. Various aspects of basic biology, chemistry, physics and
astronomy are covered. Appropriate experiments will also be demonstrated
by the instructor.
Physics 11
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 11 University
Preparation course in physics. Challenging problems are used throughout
the course to enhance students' problem solving skills. Classes are 90
minutes each and run for one semester only.
Physics 12
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the Ontario curriculum for Grade 12 University
Preparation course in physics. Challenging problems are used throughout
the course to enhance students' problem solving skills. Classes are 90
minutes each and run for one semester only.
Chemistry 11, 12
This course provides
comprehensive coverage of the principles and theories in Chemistry of the
Ontario curriculum for Grade 11, 12 University Preparation course.
Challenging problems are used throughout the course to enhance students'
problem solving skills. Classes are 90 minutes each and run for one
semester only.
* Experiments will only be
discussed theoretically in these courses.
* No laboratory work will
be performed.
